In the evening of the same day another event organized by the Municipality of Rethymno and was hosted by the University of Crete. It was an open public event, a series of experts’ presentations and a panel discussion with the public, under the topic of this year’s celebration, Sexuality Education for all: bridge for sexual health. The audience which was consisted by educators, parents as well as university students had the opportunity to discuss sexuality education from various perspectives. The Mayor of Rethymno opened the event and discuss the importance of sexuality education as a shield against sexual abuse. As a legal professional himself he shared some of his experience and thoughts on the subject.
Other speakers discussed a range of issues such as: the role of the University in educating teachers and supporting research on sexuality, how the family can accommodate the need of children to receive information on sexuality issues, the importance of sexuality education for children and young people with Autism and other learning disabilities, the disturbing phenomenon of women’s abuse, the new developments on treatment of HIV/AIDS, as well as two educational programs, Play with Frixos for pre-school and early primary school years and the sexuality education program that is being implemented in the Experimental Junior High School of Rethymno as a pilot the past three years. The Experimental Junior High School of Rethymno is the only school of secondary educational sector in Greece that have permission to implement a sexuality education program as a curriculum subject, making the city of Rethymno a pioneer on sexuality education in Greece.
